Sailing Yachts: Barens 48 Sea Trader Cutter Ketch
Featured Advert! Click here for more photos and information
Barens 48 Sea Trader Cutter Ketch This beautiful 48 foot cutter rigged ketch is sadly for sale earlier than expected owing to an unforeseen change in the owner's personal life. Bimbling is a first class, massively built cruising ketch capable of taking a seagoing couple and/or occasional guests in safety and comfort to any part of the globe. It was high on my list of requirements that she should offer the high degree of stability and sea kindliness that her long keel and heavy displacement affords. This vessel is an ideal long term liveaboard with an uncluttered interior and masses of storage lockers. She shows beautiful lines from her clipper bow aft, and has a deep dry centre cockpit. Bimbling is somewhat less suited to the role of dayboat/weekend cruiser or racer; she is, however, a perfectly functional ocean going yacht with civilized long term living accommodation. Builder: Barens - Custom built for her first owners. Designer: Dick Barens Year: 1989 Length Overall (LOA): 48 feet 14.6 metres Length on Deck (LOD): 44 feet 13.4 metres Length on Waterline (LWL): 42 feet 12.8 metres Beam: 13 feet 5 inches 4.1 metres Draught: 6 feet 1.8 metres Displacement: 20.94 tons 21.28 tonnes Ballast: 4.5 tons Lead Hull Profile: Full keel Keel mounted rudder with Propeller Aperture Registry: UK Small Ships Register (RCD Exempt) Construction: Fibreglass sandwich hull (Balsa core), fibreglass decks & superstructure. Teak external trim and teak cockpit deck and seats. Encapsulated lead keel. Iroko trim finish below decks. Teak & Juniper sole. Mechanical Data: Perkins Sabre 65hp (November 2000) - 800 hrs Hurth Gearbox (November 2000) PSS Dripless Shaft Seal Max Prop 3 blade 20 inches Diameter Cruising Speed 7.5 knots Fuel Consumption at CS ~ 1 gph Fuel Capacity 209 Gallons (950 Litres) Cruising Range 1200 Nautical miles Electrical data: 12 volt System 4 * T105 Trojan 6v Batteries in two 12v banks 210Ah 12v Engine Battery Balmar 150A Alternator Heart Interface 3 Stage Smart Regulator 2 * Magnetronic DCC 2000 Battery Monitors Air X Wind Generator 400 watt (2003) Mizzen mounted Siemens 75 watt Solar Panel Siemens 55 watt Solar Panel 220 volt Battery Charger Water & Sanitation Systems: 2 * GRP Tanks Total Capacity 250 Gallons (1150 Litres) Manual Water Pressure System PUR 12 volt Water Maker 3.5 gph output 2 * Holding Tanks (Grey) Whale Gusher Sump Pump (Fwd) Jabsco 12 volt Macerator (Aft) Lavac Head (Fwd) Jabsco Head (2009) (Aft) Whale Gusher Bilge Pump Jabsco Deck Washdown Pump Spars & Rigging: Cutter rigged Ketch Aluminium Deck Stepped Masts by Paul Green Stainless Steel Rigging (2005) Profurl System Genoa Facnor System Staysail Running Backstays (2) on both Main and Mizzen Masts Swallowtail fixed Backstay on Main Mast Spinnaker Pole Paul Green Substantial Compression Posts Winches: 2 * Barlow 19ST - 2 Speed - Mast mounted Halyard 1 * Barlow 19ST - 2 Speed - Boom mounted 1 * Barlow 19ST - 2 Speed - Main Sheet Winch 1* Barlow 23 - 2 Speed - Main Halyard Winch 2 * Barlow 25ST 2 Speed Secondary Cockpit Winches 2 * Barlow 27 2 Speed Primary Cockpit Winches 1 * Barlow 16ST Mizzen Mast Mounted Halyard Winch 1 * Barlow 16ST Mizzen Boom Mounted Winch Sails: North Genoa Dacron 1989 North Staysail Dacron 1989 North Mainsail (Battened) Dacron 1991 North Mizzen Dacron 1989 North Mizzen Staysail Dacron 1989 * North Storm Jib Dacron 1989 * North Trysail Dacron 1989 * North Yankee Dacron 1989 * Cruising Chute/Spinnaker New Sunbrella Sail Covers on Order (* = Almost new condition) Deck Equipment: Avon 6 Person Liferaft Caribe RIB 4hp Yamaha Outboard (4 stroke) 15hp Outboard Lofrans Falcon 1500 Watt Capstan/Windlass Windlass Remote Control 60lb CQR 45lb CQR 65lb Danforth 2 * Dinghy Anchors 200 feet 10mm Anchor Chain Wagner Hydraulic Steering 20 inch Destroyer Wheel Aft Facing Tiller (Emergency Steering & Wind Vane Operation) Aries Wind Vane Stanchions Lifelines 2 Boarding Gates Boarding Ladder SS Wire Jackstays (2) Horseshoe Life Savers (2) Danbuoy Bimini Spray Hood Solar Shower Bag Life Jackets (6) Harnesses Vessel Walkthrough Starting forward, the cable locker is separated from the accommodation by a watertight bulkhead. Bimbling has a large forward cabin with V-berths; this cabin feels very open and is well lit from the 2 portlights and the large hatch above. There is a hanging locker to port, five lockers beneath the bunks and 6 large lockers in the wings. Moving aft into the salon, you will find a starboard entry-way into the forward shower/head. Lavac head unit. Lockers. To port, there is a large and long straight settee. Behind and outboard of this settee is space for a long pilot berth. A centreline table with folding leaves to free up extra space. Starboard of the salon table is a deep and comfortable L-shaped settee with storage outboard and an electronics and storage locker just aft of it. Deep underseat lockers and wing lockers throughout. Main mast compression post. 5 portlights and large overhead hatch. Bookshelves. Companionway to large centre cockpit. Moving aft and to port is the sea-kindly galley. The galley is outfitted with plenty of storage and offers ample space and headroom. Equipped with a top-open refrigerator, freezer, 3 burner propane stove w/ oven, and stainless steel sink; all that is necessary to prepare great meals whilst at sea. Two portlights, extractor fan, gas safety switches. Directly opposite of the galley and to starboard is the large forward facing navigation station giving plenty of room for an array of electronics and the chart outfit. In an island compartment bounded by the galley, salon, and navigation station is the engine room with three large access panels. Aft of the navigation station through the below deck passageway is the master cabin with ensuite shower/head. The master cabin is very large and is outfitted with a queen berth to port, a centerline armchair, and single berth to starboard. Forward of the single berth, there is plenty of hanging locker space as well as outboard storage throughout the master cabin. Mizzen compression post. Wraparound bookshelves. Full headroom in all living areas, well in excess of 6 ft throughout. This is not a project boat! She has been realistically priced considering her material state and the outstanding jobs required to fully restore her to her former glory. That said it should be clear with any potential customer that I will be seeking the full asking price believing it to be fair, reflecting the current market, comparable achieved selling prices and her condition. Nominally based in the British Virgin Islands I shall be wandering throughout the Leeward and Windward islands continuously, but intend to return to Tortola, where I have an affordable marina berth, for any potential viewings. Guidance will be freely given on flights, accommodation and rental car prices. It is appreciated that this is probably a long way to travel for a casual viewing, so please feel free to ask for any further information or photographs to help in your assessment of my boat prior to arranging travel.
