The Mustang 30 was the first design specifically to the CHS Rule (now IRC) by Paul Handley who also designed the RS K6 keelboat and is a well respected racing design with around 30 built between 1988 and 2002. Moving away from the wide hull and crew balanced IOR concept, originally with a wing keel now updated to the deep fin and bulb of later versions, she is ideally suited to a crew of between 3 and 5, has the ability to plane off wind and represents a low cost way of enjoying exhilarating high performance sailing in a highly manoeuvrable boat while giving a sense of stability due to the well balanced fractional rig and deep fin and bulb keel. Ideal for club racing and with basic accommodation for 4 adults can be enjoyable for passage races as well.
Revolver, built in 1991, has been carefully set up for racing and regularly exceeds 10 knots (the record is 16.6). She meets RORC Category 4 and with some additional equipment would easily come back up to Category 3.
She is extremely light on the helm and with a large rudder is very responsive. A straightforward swept back spreader rig, moderate mainsail and three-quarter foretriangle with a 140% overlap Genoa and a blade jib for above 16kn is all we normally carry. The large Westaway Spinnaker is easy to hoist and recover from a hatch bag. The older heavy spinnaker is valuable for use in marginal and short crewed situations.

HULL
A Hand-laminated GRP hull using the best quality modern materials and manufactured in a purpose built plant under strictly controlled conditions.
White Gelcoat and Topside
KEEL
A lead bulb with 3% antimonal of approximately 630 KGs is bolted into a hull recess supported by a GRP keel frame structure. A single point lifting eye attached to the top of the keel.
RUDDER & STEERING GEAR
A transom-hung GRP aerofoil rudder with a laminated wood tiller.
SPARS & RIGGING
A deck-stepped silver-anodised fully tapered fractional mast by Proctor with single spreaders and a matching boom.
A carbon fibre retractable bowsprit by Carbospar
Dyform and 1x19 stainless steel rigging complete with bottle screws and toggles are included plus a dyneema adjustable backstay.
The boom is complete with an internal 6:1 outhaul and reefing line.
Running rigging includes a 2:1 main halyard, one jibe halyard, one fractional and one masthead genniker halyards.
Cunningham tackle is 4:1, cascade vang 16:1, two off jib sheets (inc fine tune), genniker tack line, main sheet and travel control line. Running rigging is a combination of Dyneema and Braid.
DECK GEAR & SPECIAL FITTINGS
One of 2 speed Lewmar 16a winch complete with locking handle.
Two of jibe tracks with adjustable cars.
Two of ratchet sheet blocks and two jammers for head sails.
Four of genniker sheet blocks (2 ratchet) complete with fittings.
Rope clutches for all halyards and reefing line, all leading to the centre-mounted winch.
Full main sheet system including traveller, car, blocks, etc.

This racing 1981 SJ30 was built by Vervale to the one (sole) owner’s specification. Maintained to a high level this has been an extremely successful boat racing in IRC class mainly in Falmouth, Fowey and the South West. In recent years the owner has retired from racing and the boat has been lightly used by its crew. The original soft fittings (bunk cushions etc) were never placed on board but are available for cruising fit and are therefore in extremely good condition. The boat is now ashore in Falmouth in its own customised cradle. Always wintered ashore in compound. This boat appears in extremely good condition and totally belies its age. Arguably the best SJ30 in the country. The boat comes with an extensive sails wardrobe including sails purchased recently including a 2009 main and spinaker. The hulls finish is to racing spec and unblemished. The boat has no leaks above or below deck. An early inspection would be welcome and recommended. |
