Maurice Griffiths reputation as a yacht designer is second to none and this is a fine example. She has spacious accommodation, hot water, cabin heating, full standing headroom and a well equiped galley, including cooker with grill and oven, as well as a fridge. The general condition of the boat is very good, she has obviously been well-maintained, standing rigging, running rigging and sails all appear to be in good condition.
The photographs of this boat have been update in July 2009, as you can see she looks great. With her accommodation she would be an ideal liveaboard.

This boat can only be described as the jewel in Falmouth's crown. She is truly beautiful and the work carried out in the 2008 refit is to an exceptionally high standard.
It was a privilege to be onboard.
This Tidewater is also a very practical vessel with a lot of thought with regards to the layout. She is a very spacious, comfortable boat with plenty of headroom.
This boat would be a wonderful family boat and is also easy to handle for a couple. With its shallow draught and triple keels access to a variety of anchorages and creeks is possible as well as taking the ground.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a superb example of a Maurice Griffiths Tidewater.

A beautiful 34ft LOA Masthead Sloop - Maurice Griffiths Lone Gull II (affectionately known as 'Gooney Bird').
Certificate of British Registry No. 332638.
Gooney Bird is discussed in Eric Hiscock's book 'Cruising Under Sail' as a fine example of a classic cruising yacht. She was built for Captain John Harrison in 1971 and sold to her present owner 7 years later. She spent her first years crusing the Fiji Islands but in 1987 started an epic voyage to England which took 6 years. During that time, the only gear failure was a broken shackle on the bob stay. She has weathered 5 hurricanes, one off the coast of India and came through all of them unscathed.
Gooney Bird was built in Fiji by Whippys Boat Yard, Suva in 1971. She is built of the Fiji equivalent of traditional timbers which gives her the advantage of not being so suseptical to rot. Gooney Bird is carvel built with 3/4" to 1" timbers, steam bent onto Vesi Frames (double planked & copper fastened). Her decks are 3/4" marine ply with glass cloth/epoxy finish. The interior of the hull is treated regularly with linseed oil and kerosene. There are free airways througout the boat to keep her 'sweet'.
Regretably a death in the family forces sale.

The boat has been viewed and photographed by Steven of Boatshed Falmouth. Register or log in to see 34 more photos of this boat. Its very unusual to find a steel yacht of these diminutive dimensions but believe me, she does exist. She is a very fully rigged yacht with enough sail configurations to keep the keenest "yachtie" happy. She is a well proven cruising yacht with many miles to her credit around northern Europe. As well as this, she would be perfect for single handed sailing on inshore and shallow waters. She sits nice and upright on her triple keels, so, great for drying out on mud berths. With care and a minimum of maintenance, this yacht will outlast any fibreglass or wooden boat.
This boat has recently been shot blasted, repaired and re painted.

Description
Classic centreboard Bermudan ketch built entirely of teak in Mazagon Shipyard (Bombay, India) in 1946. She was first named Zoraya then Sea Pie and now India of Poole. She has had 7 owners in 53 years - one of them being Maurice Griffiths himself. The most important matter to be attended to for the next owner are the seacock's, which although serviceable really need replacing AND the 2nd port mizzen chain plate (a new one would be best). I am in the process of varnishing, oiling and painting the topsides but weather has not been kind.

Length (LOA) 38.8 feet
Length (Waterline) 28.4 feet
Beam 10.5 feet
Draught 4.5 feet (extending to 7 with the centerboard lowered)
Accommodation
Full headroom throughout with a total of seven berths. Forward cabin separate - double berth. Saloon table (seating 4 comfortably) collapses into a double berth with a single berth opposite - doubling as a bench. Another double berth over the engine box starboard of the port companionway is well suited to the more lithe and younger crew. Fair-sized galley with cooker. Heads amidships with basin emptying into centerboard case - ingenious! Very pragmatic layout.
Sail, Engine and capacities
Masthead Genoa, main and mizzen staysail, cruising chute and storm jib and other sails - at least 600sq ft of sail. Galvanized wire rigging. 2 mast winches and 2 sheet winches - loads of spares.
Marinised Volkswagen Passat - needs work.
50 gallon diesel stowed in twin 25 gallon stainless tanks. 50 gallon freshwater tank.
Navigation equipment & miscellaneous
Garmin 235 GPS with fish finder option, NASA Clipper Duet (depth & log), SIMRAD RD68 VHF, Auto helm for both wheel and tiller autopilots, Plastimo 4 man life raft, 240V shore power with Sterling twin bank 20amp marine battery charger, twin 110amp hour batteries fitted with Vetus 3-way selector/isolator switch, wind charger provides trickle charge, 2 12v bilge pumps and a large capacity manual, new SMEV 4-hob cooker and LPG system compliant to British and USA/European standards, 2 Bruce's and 1 fishermen's anchor, newly fitted solid fuel Davey stove etc.... |
