From its large carbon wheel to the fine teak joinerwork , or simply by the smooth, graceful way it slides through the water, the new J/124 is every bit a sailing yacht… in the best sense of the word. One that is a joy to sail in all conditions with minimal crew and with rare need to employ the auxiliary diesel engine.
Yet, J/124’s focus on short-handed sailing qualities doesn’t preclude many days of offshore coastal sailing. Her narrow beam and low center-of-gravity are hallmarks of seaworthiness.
J/124 is a true escape…away from all the trappings and chores of home. Little-used amenities and complex cruising systems are discouraged where possible. But, all the important stuff is there: An adequate galley and chart table; the accessible top-loading icebox; 6 feet of headroom; three separate sleeping areas; a dodger for all-weather protection; and a cockpit made secure with 14” high backrests and seats that are long enough to sleep on.
The high-tech composite hull evolves from J’s that have dominated IRC competition in Europe over the past three years. The Hall Spars mast and ACC rudder are carbon fiber. So if you want to enjoy either offshore racing of ultra fast cruising, then bjaysus is for you!

The France II was built by Egger for the French association for the America’s Cup. The 12m JI was initially intended for boat racing. She has had several owners and several modifications. The main modifications were initiated by the present owner and after years of labour the boat was transformed into a performance cruising yacht by adding accommodation to the interior, setting up the engine and other machinery in good running order and replacing the rig and masts and superstructure. Blue Water Sailing says..."of all the boats the Johnstones have brought to market, our favorite blue water boat is the old J/40, designed in 1983 and first launched in 1984. Since then, more than 100 of these boats have been built and several have undertaken notable offshore cruises. … Compared to other boats in this size and price range (the Tartan 40, Nordic 40, Bermuda 40 and Bristol 41) the J40 is notable for its simplicity, speed, and, ease of handling. J Boats are rarely the least expensive of their class. Yet, they almost always represent good value for the money and consistent value over time."
“Blue Jay” was built in 87 and had a major refit when the present owner bought her in 2006. Over 60.000 $ were invested in parts alone plus approx. 1650 work hours done in preparation for the blue water trip she is doing at present. Among other works the complete interior was removed, re-varnished and re-installed. All wiring was removed and renewed, and so was the plumbing. A new engine was fitted. And an extensive list of new equipment fitted. Another 18,000 Euros have been spent in maintenance and upgrades since including re-spraying the hull and applying an epoxy shield and new antifouling on the underwater hull. The boat has sailed with her present owner around 16500 nm without showing any problems which includes crossing the Atlantic from the Caribbean to Europe. She is in excellent shape at present and equipped to go for any kind of serious blue water trip. Delivery in the US or Europe can be agreed. |
